Police investigate fatal shooting of 18-year-old Kent man

Baba Jawara killed June 4 in 11300 block of SE Kent-Kangley Road

Kent Police are investigating the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Kent man on the East Hill as a homicide.

Baba Jawara died June 5 from a gunshot wound of the chest, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Officers responded at about 11:15 p.m. June 4 to the area of 11300 SE Kent-Kangley Road in response to a 911 call of a shooting, according to a Kent Police statement released June 12. Officers found Jawara with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Jawara was initially alert and conscious, according to police. Paramedics transported Jawara to an area hospital where he died the next day.

Detectives have been interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence. No arrest has been made.

“They (detectives) do not believe this was a random incident,” according to the police statement.

Eighth homicide this year

This is the eighth homicide in Kent in 2023. Kent had 11 homicides in 2022, 14 in 2021, eight in 2020, four in 2019 and seven in 2018.
