A bedroom fire caused an estimated $5,000 damage Monday night to a Kent house on the West Hill after a space heater tipped over and ignited clothing on the floor.

Firefighters from Kent, Des Moines and South King County Fire and Rescue responded to the fire at about 10:35 p.m. Monday at a house in the 25100 block of 22nd Avenue South, just west of Pacific Highway South.

Kent fire investigators determined a space heater caused the fire, according to a Kent Fire Department media release.

Residents called 911 when they smelled smoke and found a fire in a back bedroom. They immediately exited the home. Nobody was injured.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire in the bedroom.

The residents of the home are staying with relatives in the area.

Kent Fire officials remind residents to keep combustibles such as paper, cardboard and clothing a safe distance from portable space heaters to prevent fires.
